4-H & FFA Livestock Clinic A Success!

On Saturday, October 13, Carroll County 4-H and the Carroll County FFA Chapter hosted a Livestock Clinic at the 4-H Livestock Barn on the Carroll County Fairgrounds.

Led by our new 4-H Agent, Joyce Doyle, the clinic was conducted to create interest in showing livestock and building a livestock club in the community.

Mallory Pennick, a senior at the University of Kentucky and member of the UK Livestock Judging Team, was the primary instructor for the clinic.  She did an EXCELLENT job, speaking on parts of the animal, considerations for buying a new animal, general animal care, showmanship, etc.

Dr. E. Muncey Pryor, DVM from the Carroll County Animal Clinic also visited with the 4-Hers and FFA members, speaking about herd health, nutrition, and diseases.

Jason Stephenson, the Certified Livestock Leader for the county, was also in attendance to encourage the youth to learn more about starting livestock projects.

Three animal species were present:  sheep, goats, and beef cattle.  We'd like to thank the following people for bringing animals to the clinic for instruction:

          Jim Graves (sheep)
          Cassidy Buchanan & Family (goat)
Jason, Levi & Caleb Stephenson (beef cattle)
Kelly, Lane & Andrea Smith (goats, beef cattle)
          Ronnie & Brenda Maines (sheep)

Check out the below pictures of the instruction time:

One of the best parts of the clinic came with the hands-on experience the attendees gained by working one-on-one with the animals.  A majority of the youth had never worked with livestock before, so it was a fantastic opportunity for them to get up close and personal with the animals.

Thank you to all that contributed to making this Livestock Clinic a success!!  There are plans to continue these clinics and focus on additional species including swine, horse, poultry, rabbits, dogs, and cats.  If you know of Carroll County 4-H-aged youth (9 years old to 18 years old) or Cloverbud-aged youth (5 years old to 8 years old) who would like to learn more about joining 4-H, contact our Extension Office at (502) 732-7030.
