Christin's Corner

Welcome to my blog, Extension to the 3rd Degree!

Extension to the 3rd Degree?  Now, what does that mean?

I'll get to explaining the title in a moment, but first, I want to touch on why I have decided to start this Extension blog...

During the third week of July, I traveled to Charleston, South Carolina to attend my first National Association of County Agriculture Agents convention.  What an experience to meet and learn from Ag Agents across the United States!  The first presentation I listened to was given by Tonya Ashworth, Extension Agent with the University of Tennessee Cooperative Extension Service.  She spoke about the ease and benefits of creating a blog to use in our Extension programming (visit her blog, Tonya By Extension).  Very quickly, I was hooked.  Thank you, Tonya!

I see blogging as an excellent way to get paperless information and updates out to producers in the county.  This blog will include articles and other pieces of useful information that come out of UK or are asked of people in Carroll County.  In addition, I will periodically include posts such as these, titled "Christin's Corner."  In Christin's Corner, I'll include updates on current programs and reminders of events coming up at the Extension Office.  To refer to past Christin's Corners, click on "Christin's Corner" under "Labels," over on the right-hand side of this blog.

Now back to the name...

Extension to the 3rd Degree.  "Extension" makes sense, right?  But "to the 3rd Degree?"  That portion refers to my family history in the UK Cooperative Extension Service.  In the year 1955, a young man in his early twenties by the name of George Robert "Bob" Herbst started in Extension as the Assistant Agriculture Agent in Pendleton County.  In 1994, Mr. Herbst's son, David, started in Extension as the Agriculture Agent in Adair County.  More recently, in September 2011, a one Miss Christin Herbst, David's daughter, started her career in Extension for Carroll County.

Father.  Son.  Granddaughter.  Three generations of Herbsts in UK Extension, therefore...

Extension to the 3rd Degree.

I hope you enjoy and utilize this blog as much as I'll enjoy writing it.  Remember always, I am here to serve you, the residents of Carroll County, and will do everything in my power to be the best Agriculture Agent I can be, bringing you the most up-to-date, researched-based information.  To subscribe to this blog, and receive email updates on future postings, enter your email address in the designated area on the right-hand side of this page.

With that said, here are a few updates to get this blog rolling:
  • My recent "Carroll County Agriculture News" newsletter for the July 2012 quarter is available for viewing on the Carroll County Extension website.  Be sure to take a look, as it deals specifically with drought issues and concerns.
  • This Thursday, August 9, the Carroll County Cattlemen's Association will meet at the Extension Office.  The meeting will begin at 6:30 PM, starting with a meal.  Dr. Matt Parker, DVM, of the Carroll County Animal Clinic, and Bob Sand, of the Beef Connection, will be the evening's guest speakers.
  • We have a new 4-H Agent!!  I am happy to announce that Joyce Doyle will be joining the Carroll County Cooperative Extension Service on Monday, August 20.  Joyce comes to us from Grant County, having served the last five years as the 4-H Youth Development Agent there.  Prior to that, she was the 4-H Program Assistant for two years.  In addition to her Extension experience, Joyce is a past middle school principal, high school principal, and girls' basketball coach in the Grant County School System.  The office is very excited to have Joyce come on board, and we look forward to working with her!
